WHAT IS LIFESTYLE PHOTOGRAPHY?

As a Guelph lifestyle photographer, I'm often asked "What is lifestyle photography?" To me, lifestyle photography is a blend between candid and documentary photography; photographing candid moments to tell the story of your every day! Lifestyle photography is how you get photos with real smiles, true laughter and genuine emotions. The goal of lifestyle photography is to capture the story of you and your family <3 To me, the best part of lifestyle sessions are the little in between moments that you can only capture with candid photography.

WHY BOOK A LIFESTYLE SESSION?

You can book a lifestyle session for almost any thing you would book a typical portrait session for: family sessions, maternity sessions, newborn sessions, couples photos and engagement photos. But what makes lifestyle sessions my favourite to photograph is that they are about so much more than life's obvious milestones.

You know how you book a photographer for your kid's first birthday party or your parents 50th Anniversary? You don't give a second thought to documenting these important milestones. But what about decorating your Christmas tree, bringing home a new puppy, carving your Halloween pumpkin or baking cookies as a family?

You might not think of these moments when you're thinking of booking a photographer. Of course a first birthday party is something you want to document! Lifestyles sessions allow you to look back on those other, equally magical moments that are what make up life! Because in 20 years what are you going to value more? Everyone sitting pretty and smiling nice-nice at the camera, or that twinkle you get in your eye when the love of your life smiles at YOU <3

I like to recommend lifestyle sessions when families feel awkward getting their photo taken (trust me, I feel your pain. I feel uncomfortable in front of the camera too). Lifestyle sessions are great because they give everyone something to do - which means less time spent worrying about a camera being pointed at you, amirite? Lifestyle sessions are also great for kids; if you've taken family photos before you've probably noticed there's an expiration on your kids patience for sitting still and smiling at the camera haha.

HOW DO LIFESTYLE SESSIONS WORK?

Your lifestyle session is completely customizable! Do you want to do an in-home lifestyle session like Sunday morning breakfast or game night? Or do you want to plan a session in the community like apple picking or learning to skate? You and I will work together to choose an activity that you think everyone in your family will enjoy. This is important because when everyone is having a good time, you will notice genuine smiles instead of strained, awkward faces. Some popular activities for lifestyle sessions are baking cookies, a picnic in the park and making breakfast together on a Sunday morning. What matters most is that you're having fun with the people you love! I'm open to any ideas and I especially love hearing about activities that are unique to you and your family <3

On the day of the shoot, I'll meet you at the location and take photos of you and your family doing your thing. I will be as inconspicuous as possible so you can focus on enjoying your time together and making more memories as a family. (And not to worry, we can always throw a few directed family photos in there for Grandma :)

Lifestyle sessions document those moments in life that you love to reminisce about - enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things (Robert Brault).

Downtown guelph fox mural photos

Rachel and Andrew had such a fun and unique engagement session!

We started off with a warm drink at The Red Brick Cafe downtown Guelph, since they are in a gorgeous red brick building with a fantastic mural by Australian multidisciplinary artist, Andrew Frazer.

Then we grabbed some shots by the gorgeous stone and ivy walls in my secret spot ;) Rachel and Andrew brought some cute (and some hilarious (see "cat mask") props to their session. I always welcome you to bring anything meaningful or that you just think would make a fun prop!

After this we headed over to Wimpy's Diner for a retro looking, milkshake sharing, adorable engagement shoot <3

We had fun with records and some other vintage props. Oh and hey, if you're into vintage stuff, check out their Insta @thebirdandthebearvintage

Enjoy some of my favourite images from their session below.

What a gorgeous freaking day! Steph & Spencer's wedding was held on her family property in the Blue Mountains. It was the perfect blend of country chic and classy simplicity. There was meaning incorporated into every detail of their day; from the first look in the same place Spencer proposed (which Steph narrowly avoided wearing sweatpants to haha), to photos on the little foot bridge he built, to the ceremony that took place on the newly landscaped steps that their family and the whole wedding party spent a weekend of hard labour on! It was absolute perfection. Read some of Steph & Spencer's love story below <3

ONCE UPON A TIME

The story of how these two love birds met starts in 2011 when Spencer and Stephanie were in third year at the University of Guelph. Both of them happened to attend a party hosted at Steph's university house. Steph saw Spencer first and asked him for his name. After drinking games and fun, Steph was having a *little* trouble remembering Spencer's name... Was it James? Sebastian? Needless to say, Spencer was a little put off that "this girl" couldn't remember his name.

They met a number of times after that and Steph kept forgetting Spencer's name! (Steph says that drinking never played a role in that ....)

Finally Spencer decided enough was enough and sent a message to Steph saying "ITS SPENCER AS IN DIS-SPENCER!" After that, the two went on dates and quickly fell for each-other.

Six later and they've been on a number of adventures together! They have traveled the world together while Spencer was working in Germany and Steph was teaching. Living together and most recently, buying a house! It has been a crazy and amazing adventure!

THE BIG DAY

Did you have an engagement photoshoot? How did that prepare you for your wedding photos?

Yes, in late fall at the Guelph Correctional Centre (see the photos here) which my mom told me was fitting for a ball and chain lol. It helped us feel more comfortable with each other and staring into each others eyes for awkward long moments.

Describe your inspiration for your wedding.

I wanted to feel comfortable and at home so we had it at my home! Wanted it to feel natural and part of the outdoors.

What were some personal touches you included in the wedding and what did they symbolize?

Being at my parents home, very personal touches and having local people help makes it feel like one big happy family.

How did you feel on your wedding day?

Amazing, like I was on a cloud and didn’t want to come down. I was so sad when it was over!

What are each of your favourite moments from your wedding day?

My favourite moment would be all the speeches and amazing words people said, as well as the dance party at the end! Oh and actually getting married was pretty cool experience too haha!

This is the little footbridge that Spencer built!

drone crashed in a tree

Look closely and you'll see the drone that crashed lol

Was there a particular moment you are glad to have memorialized your photos?

When we snuck off and took some more intimate photos before the end of the night!

Do you have any advice for other couples planning their weddings?

Make sure you remember the day and take a moment for yourselves to say you did it!! And enjoy it!

THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES

What are your plans for the future?

Home Reno’s, permanent job, babies and puppies!
